indigenous australian art

Indigenous Australian Art from the Peppimenarti Community Centre, which was established in the 1970’s by Regina Wilson and her husband Harry and is situated approximately 200km South West of Darwin, Northern Territory.  Painters such as Theresa Lemon, Patsy Marfurra, Linda Gilbert, Dianne Hodgson, Eileen Gilbert, Margaret Kundu and Martha Kuniung have taken to putting stiches onto canvas, or prints, transferring the third dimension of weaving into two dimensions.  In 2000 Regina Wilson and Theresa Lemon represented Peppimenarti Community at the Contemporary Art Biennale staged as part of the Pacific Arts Festival in Noumea.  In 2003 Regina Wilson was named the winner of the General Painting category of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander Art Award, drawing further attention to artistic output of this vibrant community.  Her work is held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Queensland Art Gallery and many major institutions as well as in numerous significant private collections.

The Irrunytju Community is 12 kms south west of the tri border, where the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia meet.  The Irrunytju Arts Centre was set up in 2001 and it was soon after that the works being produced was seen to be unique, achieving public acclaim and exposure. One of the emerging artists from the community is Roma Butler who began painting in 2001.  Born in 1959 Roma continues to practice traditional cultural activities – her vibrant, colourful canvases depicting Tjukurrpa (dreamtime stories) brings together contemporary painting techniques and media with ancient visual language. The artworks reflect the strong relationships between the artists, their land and culture.
